What is the Difference Between a Fitness Coach and a Personal Trainer?

We've all heard these terms from the time we were very small. We all have preconceived ideas of what makes up a coach and what separates the good ones from the bad, right? But, do we really know what a coach does or is suppose to do?

When you hear or read about sports teams you hear them talk about the coach and about the trainers. The coaches seem to be in the limelight more than the trainers and I believe that it's because the coaches do so much more for the players than the trainers!! I realize that most of you think that a trainer and a coach are one in the same.....not true.

The definition of a coach-- in today's arena-- is one that discovers why you behave the way you do and helps you uncover the things that sabotage your plans. In turn you become accountable for your own actions.

The trainer is present at all times to push, motivate, and design each program specifically for you. The trainer makes sure that you execute each exercise properly and that each muscle group gets a workout. When you are working with a personal trainer you just go through the motions while she (the trainer) adjusts the weights, seat positions, and counts the reps. You wouldn't be there if the trainer wasn't right along with you. You become addicted to the physical presence of that person (trainer). You become a pawn at the hands of the trainer.

With expertise in problem solving a coach helps you stay motivated and moving toward your goals when life's daily distractions threaten to take you off course.

A coach enables you to become responsible for your own results. A coach can see what it is that is stopping you from reaching your goals and will help you work on eliminating those stumbling blocks.

A coach works on the internal side of physical training and helps you make a mind-body connection.

When you are working with a coach you become responsible for your own results, are more grounded in your new found lifestyle, and you actually change because you want to, not because someone is forcing you to. You actually take ownership of your own health and fitness.

As coaches, we look at personal trainers as "adult baby-sitters".

A coach can do so much more for you than a trainer.

coaching addresses the whole person, not just the cardiovascular, strength or flexibility training. coaching gets under the surface to discover why you are unhealthy and what obstacles are preventing you from becoming that fit, healthy, energized person that you once were.

One of the greatest and most freeing thing about working with a coach is that you work out on your time....your workouts are set up for you ahead of time so you know what you are suppose to do, and you do them at your convenience.

Here's another plus: You don't have to make an appointment to meet a trainer at a specified time or be forced to join a certain gym where your trainer works.
